Data sources and method

What the data is

Temperature, rain, humidity, cloud and wind are daily values from the ERA5 reanalysis (ECMWF / Copernicus) for 2006-2025, at the 0.25° grid point nearest each city.

Sea temperature is daily NOAA OISST v2.1 for 2020-2025, at the ocean cell nearest the beach. Sea temperature changes little from year to year, so six years give a stable monthly mean.

Every number here is a past record. Nothing on this site forecasts future weather.

Daily highs and lows are ERA5 values shifted month by month to a nearby weather station (GHCN-Daily paired days or WMO 1991-2020 normals), because a grid cell that is mostly sea runs too cool or too warm. Da Lat, Taipei, Kaohsiung and Bali have no usable station and stay uncorrected; Los Angeles highs are left uncorrected because the station sits on the coast.

The best-month marks and the city rankings come from one score: 55% for how close the mean high is to 24°C (it falls to zero at 12°C away) and 45% for how few rain days there were (zero at 15 or more). It ranks comfort for sightseeing only; for a snow or beach trip, read the numbers instead. Clearly wet months (9 or more rain days and well above the city's usual rain) are never marked.

How rain days are counted

A rain day is 1 mm or more. ERA5 tends to count too many light-rain days, so each month is calibrated against nearby station records (GHCN-Daily or WMO 1991-2020 normals).

Months without a usable station are marked "not yet station-calibrated" and their headline leaves rain out.

Other measures

A clear day averages under 30% cloud cover; an overcast day 80% or more. A muggy day has a mean dew point of 20°C or more. A windy day averages 30 km/h or more.

Who writes the notes

The notes for each city and month are written separately for each city, checked against tourism boards, weather services and encyclopedias. Festival dates often move, so check the official listing before you go.

How to read the pages

Date by date Each date shows in how many of the past 20 years it had rain (1 mm or more). Weekdays follow the next time that month comes round. Tap a date to see its 20 years.

★ Taller bars mean comfortable highs and fewer rain days, compared only within this city.

Day by day temperature Mean of each date over 20 years. The shaded band shows how far the daytime high swung between years.

Typhoons · Hurricanes Storm tracks: NOAA IBTrACS. Counted when a storm of tropical-storm strength (34 kt or more) came within the distance.
