Nara in July

The wettest month of the year, and after the rains end in mid month the summer heat sets in. The park is tiring at midday, so go in the morning or near sunset. Sneakers beat sandals on hot stone paths.

It was a hot month: 32°C by day and 23°C after dark. About 12 days a month saw rain, enough that a wet-weather plan was worth having. It varied a lot from year to year. July 2025 had 5 rain days; 2020 had 22.

Highs topped 30°C on 22 days of the month on average. Mixing in indoor stops at midday made sense. The warmest year was 2025, with highs averaging 36.5°C, 4.6°C above normal. Wet days did not mess around: about 17 mm each, the kind of rain that drives you into a doorway.
