Beppu is a hot spring town, so weather shapes the trip more than usual. Winter has few rainy days, which is when the steam over the Hells rises most clearly, and June, during the rainy season, has the most wet days of the year. Typhoons come closest in August and September. Plan one day for the Hells circuit and one for a side trip such as Yufuin or Mt. Tsurumi, and keep room to swap them with the weather. The Hells are for looking, not bathing, so you need to find a separate bath to soak in.
