Nagoya in January

Among the fewest rainy days of the year. Cold northwest winds make clear skies feel colder than they look. Some shops close for the first three days of the year, and Atsuta Shrine is busy with visitors.

Cold, plain and simple: highs of 10°C, lows of 1°C. Warm cafes and museums earned their keep. Showers came now and then, about 5 rain days in all, and most of the month stayed dry. January was bone dry in 1 of 20 years, yet 2020 brought 10 rain days.

The month opened with 9.8 hours of daylight and closed with 10.4. Dusk came early. Frost touched 10 nights of the month on average, enough to glaze puddles and shaded steps at first light. Not every year was typical: 2020 ran 2.4°C warmer than the mean, with highs of 11.9°C. The coldest night came in 2018, at −4.1°C.

Typhoons i No tropical storm passed within 300 km in this month over the last 20 years. Typhoons: June to October
