Rome weather by month
2006-2025, 20 years of records · Not a forecast
Rome has a Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers, with most rain arriving in autumn and early winter. November is the wettest month and July the driest. In July and August there is little shade over the ruins at midday, so sightsee early in the morning or in the evening. Spring and October are the easiest months for walking. Around Ferragosto on 15 August many Romans leave town and shops close. Winter days can be sunny, but there is a fair amount of rain, so bring a waterproof layer. Going early also means shorter queues at the main sights.
On the record, May, September and October were the most forgiving months for visiting Rome, judged on warmth and rain together. The wet and dry seasons were distinct: rain days bottomed out in July and August (2) and peaked in December to February (9).
