Porto sits right on the Atlantic and is one of the wetter major cities in Europe. Rain is most frequent from October to February, while July and August are nearly dry. In summer the northerly wind keeps the city cooler. The city is hilly with stone streets that get slippery in the wet, so bring a rain jacket and shoes with grippy soles. On the night of 23 June the São João festival pulls the whole city onto the streets and rooms book out early. Even in midsummer you need a thin layer in the evening, and in winter a waterproof jacket is a must.
