Barcelona in January

On the evening of 5 January the Three Kings arrive by sea at the port and parade into the centre. The 6th is a public holiday. Midday sun can be warm enough for a terrace seat, though mornings and evenings are cool. Calçot (grilled spring onion) season runs through winter into spring.

January in Barcelona was brisk: 14°C by day, 6°C at night. Standing in the shade felt chilly. With about 4 rain days, showers were an occasional nuisance rather than the rule. It varied a lot from year to year. January 2015 had 1 rain day; 2010 had 10.

Days were short. Daylight grew from 9.2 to 10.0 hours across the month, so plan outdoor sights early. About 9 nights a month dipped under 5°C, cold enough to want a jacket for the walk back. The coldest night came in 2011, at −0.3°C.
